Most electrical calls do not arrive with a diagnosis. They arrive as a sentence: half the garage is dead, the hall light dims when the AC starts, a breaker goes every few days and nobody can say why. Diagnostic work is what turns that sentence into a location. Describe what the house is doing and get connected with an independent, TDLR-licensed electrician working in the county.
A circuit is a chain and a fault is somewhere along it. The craft is cutting down the length of chain still to be searched, with the fewest holes in the drywall. The first move is rarely a meter. It is mapping the circuit — establishing which receptacles, switches, lights and hardwired appliances actually sit on the breaker in question, and in what order. In a Fort Bend production house that map is seldom what the panel schedule says: the handwritten legend was filled in on a hurried afternoon in the year of the closing, and twenty years of ceiling fans, a converted garage and a pool sub-feed have moved things since.
Once mapped, the search gets split. On a run of fourteen devices the useful question is not “which one is bad” but “is it upstream or downstream of the seventh.” Test at the middle and half the chain drops out in one move; four or five such decisions cover a run that would take an afternoon device by device.
Then comes the ordering that separates a fast diagnosis from a slow one: the ends get checked before the middle. The first device on a run carries current for everything behind it, so a failing termination there takes the rest of the circuit with it. The last device is the one most likely to have been added later by somebody nobody was watching. The middle boxes are usually blameless.
Something You Can Check Yourself
Write down what is dead and what is not, including outdoor receptacles, garage receptacles and the ones behind furniture. Then press the test and reset buttons on every GFCI device you can find — bathrooms, garage, kitchen, outside, sometimes a hallway. A tripped GFCI upstream explains a lot of dead receptacles that look unrelated, and ruling it out costs nothing.
A dead circuit is, counterintuitively, the cheap call. It fails continuously, so it can be measured continuously: every test returns an answer and the job usually ends the same visit. An intermittent fault is the opposite. It is not present when anyone is looking, so it has to be provoked or waited for — which is why it gets quoted in time rather than as a flat repair. Every condition you can name removes a category of cause.
“It only does it when it rains” is one of the most useful sentences a homeowner can say. It is not vague; it is a filter. Weather-linked faults live where water reaches the system — the weatherhead and service entrance, exterior receptacles and their in-use covers, soffit and patio fixtures, landscape lighting, or a direct-buried feeder to a detached garage, shop or well house that an irrigation trencher clipped years ago. A house on acreage in the west or south of the county carries far more of that exposed hardware than one mid-block.
Other conditions filter just as hard. Dimming that lands exactly when the condenser starts is load behavior, pointing at voltage drop, service size, or a termination carrying more than it should. A fault that only appears in summer points at heat and expansion at a connection. A fault with no pattern at all is the one that genuinely takes hours, because there is nothing to provoke it with.
The receptacle, switch, breaker, GFCI, AFCI or fixture has failed internally. Contacts lose grip after two decades of plugs; a socket corrodes. The best outcome: cheap part, known location, quick fix. It is also why most people assume the device is the problem.
Conductor fine, device fine, but the connection between them has loosened, oxidized or was made badly — a backstabbed receptacle, a screw never fully torqued, a neutral poorly landed on the bar. Resistance rises, the joint heats, heat loosens it further. This is the category that gets worse on its own, and it shows as flickering, warmth at a plate or a smell long before it shows as a dead circuit.
The cable is damaged between two boxes — a screw driven through it by a floor installer, rodent damage in the attic, a buried feeder cut by a post hole. Least common and most expensive, because the repair is not a part, it is access: opening a wall or an attic run to reach a point never meant to be reached again.
Only one of the three is a parts problem. The other two are labor and access — which is why a quote treating every fault as a device swap is quoting the easy case.

Troubleshooting is the one electrical service where the deliverable is information rather than hardware: a location and a cause. The repair that follows may be fifteen minutes on a five-dollar part; that does not make the diagnosis the cheap half. Diagnosis also sorts the job into the right service: a fault that turns out to be the panel is a panel and service upgrade, one at an aluminum termination is aluminum remediation, and a pattern of failures across a whole pre-1970 house is a rewiring conversation. Buying the house rather than living in it makes an electrical inspection the right product — a survey rather than a chase.
A circuit that is dead every minute of the day is usually traced in well under an hour, because the fault stays visible for the whole search. A fault that appears once a week has to be provoked or waited for, and gets billed in time rather than by the repair.

Usually not, and doing it first is the most common wasted step. A breaker that trips is normally reporting something real: an overload, a short, or a ground fault. In unincorporated Fort Bend County there is no county electrical permit and no county electrical inspection, so nothing external is triggered. Inside Missouri City, Richmond, Rosenberg, Stafford, Fulshear, Meadows Place or Needville the city sets its own thresholds and they differ — confirm before assuming. The license does not change either way: Occupations Code §1305.151 applies inside a city and outside one.
